THURSDAY AT SHAW STREET: CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF NYAH MWAY~ BIRTHDAY BLOCK PARTY
UTICA, N.Y. - THURSDAY, August 8th at 6:00 PM EST: The Justice for Nyah Mway team will be hosting a birthday block party to celebrate the life of Nyah Mway on the 900 block of Shaw Street. Community members are invited to bring their own candles, letters of support, art/posters, and chairs to join in commemorating Nyah's birthday and honoring his life.
Nyah Mway, a 13-year-old Karen refugee boy, was tragically killed by a Utica Police Officer. Nyah had attended a bible study and barbeque before encountering law enforcement. The Justice for Nyah Mway organization seeks to bring awareness to the circumstances of his death and advocate for justice and legislative change.
The birthday block party will feature traditional Karen Don dancing by Nyah Mway’s dance team from the Buddhist temple, Buddha Dama Thuka. Additional guest speakers will share their testimonies about interactions with the police and the impact on the community. There will also be a big birthday cake to share with everyone in attendance.
